Our Story

Our Story

This is personal.

In 2014, SorsaMED Co-Founders Lynnette Kaid and Lisa Yancey attended a cannabis conference in Tel Aviv. During one of the presentations, they learned more about the medicinal benefits of cannabis for neurological diseases, pain management, and mood alteration, among other things. What was even more interesting than what was talked about, was what was not.

Of all the ailments listed, Sickle Cell Disease was not among the number. Having personal experience with SCD after losing her mother to the disease, Lynnette asked what has since become the unofficial credo of SorsaMED, "why not?"

Why wasn't SCD on the agenda?

The most common hemoglobin disorder across the globe, and yet there are minimal pain management options available. 57% of Sickle Cell Anemia cases are found in just three countries: India (27.5M), Nigeria (3.8M), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (105,200).

Approximately 100,000 Americans suffer from sickle cell disease, with an occurrence in 1 of every 365 Black American births.

Our Founders left Tel Aviv with a new purpose, and a clear vision for what would become SorsaMED.

Our Company

This is what we're about.

Innovative Technology

At the core of SorsaMED, is a strong belief in the spirit of ingenuity and the power of curiosity. As humans, we are continuously reimagining what is possible.

The question driving this work: Can we innovate products that make the options for Sickle Cell Disease sufferers healthier and more responsive to their overall needs--no matter where they are in the world?

Health & Wellness

SorsaMED is working toward alternatives beyond opioids for children and adults, and believe that pain management properties in cannabinoids and the high concentrations of vitamins, antioxidants, and proteins in microalgae can provide a valid, less addictive alternative.

We understand that it is just as important to treat a person as it is to address their disease.  It is with this in mind that SorsaMED seeks solutions that take into consideration the nuanced experiences of sickle cell patients. Our products are designed with three goals in mind, pain management, nutrient supplementation, and mood stabilization. And where possible, we want the texture, smell, or taste to be desirable. There is enough pain and discomfort experienced by SCD sufferers.  We center their overall wellness and satisfaction.

We understand that it is not enough to mitigate pain, the whole person must be addressed.

Social Equity

SorsaMED is unapologetic in our commitment to developing inclusive spaces in the biologics industry that simultaneously prioritize diseases that disproportionately impact black and brown communities, as well as uplift black and brown thought leadership and expertise. As we seek to provide innovative, holistic solutions, we are also creating a pipeline for black and brown professionals to enter the cannabis industry in addition to exploring a condition that likely impacts someone they know.
